Luminary is an independent publication covering design, architecture, and visual culture. It publishes four times a year in a format that deliberately slows down the reading experience — no infinite scroll, no algorithmic feed.

The Brief

Luminary had a voice and a point of view. What they lacked was a visual system that could hold it together across issues and contributors. Each issue had been designed somewhat independently, and the result was a publication that felt inconsistent — not in a charming way.

The System

I built a layout system around two constraints: a strict 12-column grid and a limited type palette. One headline face (a high-contrast serif), one text face (a humanist sans), one weight each. All drama comes from scale and proportion.

The system is documented in a Notion-based guide that any guest art director can follow — specific enough to maintain coherence, loose enough to allow genuine creative variation between issues.

What Worked

Constraint as creative direction. Editors who previously felt uncertain about layout decisions now had a framework to work within. The questions shifted from “is this right?” to “how far can we push this?”
